How We Began - Letter from Our President

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

When I’m with my writing peers or attending a writing workshop and especially when I’m at a writing conference or retreat, I leave feeling inspired. Sometimes that feeling lasts for hours, sometimes weeks. If only there was a way to bottle it up and reserve some for later.

At the start of the Pandemic, my muse deserted me. I could barely bring myself to my notebook let alone write anything. Thankfully, many writing organizations started offering virtual classes and workshops. I was able to attend more workshops in the Pandemic than I have since I graduated college. Like sips from a canteen, it kept me going during what felt like a long dry walk. Now I’m able to return to my writing with improved skills, new ideas and a broader understanding of my craft.

As the political chaos heightened, so did my awareness of the power of words and how they are used to motivate people. Even with little evidence of any truth behind them, words sway people. As I watch the admiration of poetry and Amanda Gorman swell, I am convinced there are others out there that can do the same. There are others out there that have something to say, something positive, something that can make our world and our lives a little richer. I am convinced there are people are out there that just need some guidance, or some encouragement, or a path to get their words out to the masses and make a difference. Maybe you are one of those people.

These are the reasons I finally listened to a poet friend, grabbed another and started the Nebraska Poetry Society. This is your oasis. A place to re-fuel, to learn, to inspire and grow. Our goal is to provide you with the tools and resources you need to take your craft wherever you want it to go. Everyone is welcome.

Grab your water bottle and join us.
