Nebraska
Poetry Retreat

October 5-8, 2023
Norfolk Lodge & Suites

A retreat cleverly disguised as a conference (wink, wink!). Don’t worry, though, because you can make the weekend whatever you need it to be. And regardless of what you call it, it’s a great opportunity for poets across the region to come together in a safe, nurturing, educational environment.

Whether you’re interested in the classes or you simply want an escape from the everyday where you can be still and find some inspiration, the Nebraska Poetry Retreat has something for you. The benefits of attending are many, not only to you, the poet, but also to you, the person.

Your day will begin with activities to jumpstart your creativity and end with a night of entertainment. In between are workshops to educate and inspire with plenty of time to relax, rejuvenate, and, most importantly, to write. We hope you join us.

Retreat Workshops

Triggering the Imagination

with Amy Haddad

Friday 3:15-p4:45p

Through generative prompts we will write a rough draft of a poem with a story you feel needs to be told. Then we will deviate from the initial inspiration to add something else whether it belongs in the poem or not and finally, we will use or replace words in this poem in progress for the sake of sound. The whole process is a means to get closer to our authentic selves in our writing.

13+ Ways of Looking at a Sonnet

with Erica Reid

Saturday 1:30p-3p

What happens when you blend the sonnet with a ghazal? Deconstruct or erase into a sonnet? Lose or even hide your rhymes? This class explores over a dozen techniques that contemporary poets are using to keep the sonnet fresh, groundbreaking, and unexpected.

Objects as Poetic Treasures

with Stephanie Marcellus

Saturday 10:14a-11:45a

Pulitzer Prize winning poet Sharon Olds once said, "Poems come from ordinary experiences and objects.” In this workshop, we will be exploring the ways in which we can transform objects into poems and how objects can transform our poetic craft by inspiring us, triggering memories, and ultimately unlocking the poems that we hold deep within ourselves.

Guided Meditation for Writers: Forest Vespers

with Erica Reid

Friday 10:15a-11:45a

Imagine stepping into a forest glade at twilight and finding—what, exactly? Experience an imaginative guided meditation tailored specifically to writers, meant to generate inventive and unexpected images, phrases, and ideas. This workshop welcomes all writers of any style and experience level.

Writing with Traditional Forms

with Barbara Schmitz and Lin Brummels

Friday 1:30p-3p

While poetry forms have a reputation for being confining, the rules of form can open new pathways and encourage the writer to try something new – something out of the box that leads to new revelations.  We will learn and play with three forms: ghazal, pantoum, and Alemseged’s alphabetical rhyming scheme. Definitions and examples will be provided with time for discussion and practice.

Bring Your Poetry Reading to Life!

with Rita Paskowitz

Saturday 3:15p-4:45p

Join Rita Paskowitz in an interactive workshop that will have you using storytelling techniques to take your poetry from the page to the podium. Bring an open heart and an open mind—as well as a pencil and a poem you’d like to work on.

Igniting Your Creativity

with Charlene Pierce

Friday & Saturday 9a-10a

We will begin each day by jumpstarting our creative energy while having fun. Each day we will experiment with different ways to get the creative sparks firing. It will feel like playtime but will prepare you for creating at your best. The tools we will use are based on the research of Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D in “Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind,” the concepts in “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert, and other research on divergent thinking.

Inspiration in the Mundane

with Brandy Prettyman

Thursday 2p-3p

Some of the most powerful poetry evokes not the broad themes of our universe but the events of the day-to-day we forget to be present for. In this workshop, we will take an interactive journey to find inspiration in the routine, mundane aspects of our lives and learn how to craft those small bits of normalcy into something extraordinary.

Fiction Tricks for Effective Poetic Language

with Julie Haase

Thursday 3:15p-4:15p

You have the idea, the metaphors, the structure. So how do you find the right words that will engage readers and draw them into your poem? Learn to use some of the same tricks that are used in fiction writing to help bring your imagery, metaphors, and messages to life.
